Black Teacher Appreciation Day – Meet the Nominees (Part 15)

We aren't done sharing our Black Teacher Day nominees! Here are ten more with notes of thanks:

Ms. Tyanna Harris, Brooklyn, NY: "This teacher has been an amazing face of our school for the incoming Freshmen and their families every year, giving them a solid academic and social foundation. In addition, she directed our Black History Month Showcase, is revitalizing our library, and will be teaching AP African-American Studies to Seniors starting next year."

Ms. Tyree McIntosh, Brussels, Belgium: "She goes above and beyond for her students. Doesn't mind putting her students before herself so that they can be successful."

Ms. Valerie Williams, Garland, TX: "She goes above and beyond for her students every day! She has compassion and understanding for the whole child! She gives second chances and teaches honesty and chill."

Ms. Zakia Garner, Miami, FL: "Although I was close with my mother, Mrs. Garner-Marchan became a second mother to me and to many of her students. She created a safe and welcoming space in her classroom, made learning math enjoyable, and always incorporated meaningful life lessons. She even introduced us to concepts like investing in stocks. Now, as an educator myself, I still proudly call her 'Ma.'"

Ms. Karima Bond, Cincinnati, OH (multiple nominations): "Karima Bond works diligently to ensure all of our students have opportunities to reach and exceed their potential. She is passionate about learning and maintaining a growth mindset!"

"This teacher has dedicated herself to the uplift of our youth in her school and community. She is an advocate and very active in her church and community theatre as well. I have never met a teacher more involved and caring than Ms. Bond. She is passionate and very active in her community and she is an amazing mother 6, 5 of who have graduated from Cincinnati Public School. She deserves her flowers while she is with us."

Mrs. Candis Francis, Kansas City, MO: "Not only is she a teacher, she is a mentor. She has spoke life into many of our students and helped them believe in themselves. Students talk about her class in the halls. I've heard young men citing lines from the poetry they have written in her class. Students get excited about the mock crime scene she built in her classroom, along with mock trials to get students excited about debate and creating argumentative essays. She weaves life lessons into every moment with her students. I am so grateful to teach alongside her."

Ms. V. Frazier, Detroit, MI: "Ms. Frazier has truly set the standard for what intentional teaching looks like, her flawless instruction and genuine care make every student feel seen, supported, and capable. I’m thankful for her because she goes beyond academics, consistently meeting the well-being and individual needs of her students in a way that leaves a lasting impact."

Coach Kevin Billings, El Dorado, AR: "Mr. Kevin Billings inspired me by making learning engaging and meaningful, always pushing me to think deeper and believe in my abilities. I’m thankful for him because he genuinely cares about his students and goes the extra mile to help us succeed both in and out of the classroom."

Ms. Janae Aiken, Charlotte, NC: "Ms. Aiken changed my life because she was the only teacher who truly cared about me and all her students. She always made class fun & engaging. She's also hilarious 😂"

Ms. Alina Hinton, Atlanta, GA: "To define teacher, you would say Mrs. Hinton. She has been the rock at her school for over 14 years, standing in the gap for the students. I'm thankful for her and how she places herself second to meet the needs of the students."
