Black Teacher Appreciation Day – Meet the Nominees (Part 13)

Let's keep cheering for our nominated teachers. These next ten teachers are also part of our Black Teacher Appreciation Day celebration:

Mr. Pedro Fequiere, Oakland, CA: "Student Teacher Fequiere is a thoughtful practitioner who ensures lessons reflect the reality and beauty of history through a pro-Black lens. Students are not just consumers of curriculum; they are critical thinkers."

Ms. Phyllis Baker, Garland, TX: "She teaches the whole child. She listens, motivates and encourages students to be their very best versions of themselves!"

Mr. Randy Small, Rembert, SC: "This teacher goes above and beyond to motivate and encourage students as well as staff on a daily basis. He volunteers in the community and serve as a coach to give back to our youth! He’s currently serving as the District Teacher of the Year for Lee County School District."

Mr. Richard Glass, Jr., Chicago, IL: "Richard’s gift for building deep relationships and caring for the whole student in even as the principal, became the cornerstone of his own leadership philosophy at his campus and I saw it in every student, every day. His example lives in every wrap-around program he has built, every young man he has empowered, and every alternative learning environment where he works to ensure no scholar is overlooked.“

Mr. Robert Dunham, Chesterfield, VA: "For almost a decade, he has made it in major impact on several communities within the state of Virginia. He has even gone viral and on the Ellen DeGeneres show a few years ago for his thoughtless efforts to be of support to his students. For him to be a special education, teacher, he is always at the top of the stats for passing statewide test. He continues to break records and make great strides with all of his students, no matter their background or grade level."

Ms. Sandra Foster-King, San Diego, CA: "Ms. Foster-King encouraged me not to give up in life. She was always there to listen to me talk about my problems at home with my drug addicted parents. She would let me come to her class after school and hang out when I didn't want to go home. She was the first teacher that told me I was smart and beautiful even though i was overweight and had low self esteem. She also encouraged me to go to college and not become like my parents. She is the reason I am a teacher today."

Ms. Shatobeca Rhymes-Shavers, Pine Bluff, AR: "Mrs. Rhymes-Shavers has inspired me to believe, "When We Reach One We Teach One" but we have to become the One. I am thankful for her dedication that goes beyond the school hours, reaching children who needs the extra help."

Ms. Shelia Marable, Louisville, KY: "Ms. Marable defines Black excellence. She is the most educated woman I know. She handles life’s challenges with grace and dignity. She has been one of my most respected mentors."

Ms. Sherika Jackson, Pine Bluff, AR: "Ms. Jackson always goes above and beyond for her students, pushing them past their comfort zones so they can be great. I’m thankful for her because she truly cares, and that makes all the difference."

Ms. Shontelle Mapson, Champaign, IL: "Shontelle is relentless in her pursuit of growth as an educator, and it shows. She doesn’t settle, she doesn’t coast, and she never stops learning. Every move she makes is intentional, ensuring her students build the reading skills they need not just to get by, but to truly succeed."
