Black Teacher Appreciation Day – Meet the Nominees (Part 3)
We are sharing more than 150 Black teachers who deserve to hear why they deserve celebration ahead of Black Teacher Appreciation Day. Here are ten more teachers you should know and what people have to say about them:

Dr. Michael Browner, Newport, RI: "Dr.Browner inspired me to come out of my shell as a shy & and non-confident student. He helped me become the student I am today and has played a vital role in my success. He also took me under his wing and showed me the ropes of how to be successful."

Dr. Derrick Standifer, Atlanta, GA: "Dr. Derrick doesn't just teach science. He has taught 30+ students to solve Rubik’s Cubes, master chess, and his third graders have mastered concepts like order of operations and are learning algebra. Seeing him show up every day in a suit and tie and greeting students with high fives and high energy is really amazing to see.
This teacher goes beyond academics and builds a culture of excellence, consistency, and belief in every student. The impact isn’t just what students learn, it’s who they become because of the standard he sets every single day."

Dr. Heather Robinson, Exton, PA (multiple nominations): "Ms. Heather inspires and excites my twins every day. They have grown so much both educationally and personally in the last year they have had her as their teacher. Their curiosity has bloomed and they get excited to see her every morning. She definitely has found a way to make learning fun and effective that it stays with them."
"Dr. Heather Robinson creates a nurturing, joyful classroom where every child feels seen, safe, and excited to learn. I’m deeply thankful for the patience, kindness, and confidence she instills in her students, shaping both their hearts and their love of learning."

Dr. Joy Barnes Johnson, Trenton, NJ: "Dr. Joy Barnes-Johnson has inspired me to be my best self in everything that I set out to do by tirelessly serving children and their teachers across grade levels. After she works in a NJ charter school, she works with Philly high school students, introducing them to content and careers in STEM fields. Dr. BJ, as she is called, makes me better by her example and her dedication."

Dr. Octavia Blount, Philadelphia, PA (multiple nominations): "Ms. Blount was always very adamant about the success of all of her students, but especially her black students. She gave us all an opportunity to grow & be amazing versions of ourselves even when she was deemed as “mean” or “strict.” She was the type of teacher that you just appreciate for the pressure she applied that kept us on our toes to do our best!"
"Dr. Blount's class changed the way I see myself and what I’m capable of. She didn’t just teach the subject; she taught me how to think, how to believe in my own voice, and how to show up with purpose. I’m thankful for her because she saw potential in me long before I saw it in myself, and that kind of belief stays with a person forever."

Dr. Sandra Murphy, Harlem, NY: "Dr. Murphy inspired me by being intentional in centering and elevating Black History, ensuring that our stories are not treated as an afterthought but as essential to understanding the full scope of our past and a blueprint for our future. I’m deeply thankful for the way she’s expanded my perspective and instilled a stronger sense of identity, pride, and responsibility to carry that knowledge forward."

Dr. Squoia Holmes, Chattanooga, TN: "Dr. Holmes teaches Computer Science Foundations and she helps her students see that computers and technology are everywhere. She shows them that the skills they learn can be applied to any career, goal, or real-life situation.
Her students learn valuable lessons regarding Google Sites through class projects. She inspires her students to use creativity as they design, develop, & build their own websites. They use the skills she teaches them as they present ideas in a meaningful way.
Most importantly, students learn that they are not just users of technology; they can be confident creators, problem-solvers, and future-ready leaders."

Dr. Stacy Luckett, Pine Bluff, AR: "Dr. Stacy Luckett has pushed me to stop thinking small and start leading with intention—her example challenged me to turn my experience into real impact instead of staying comfortable. I’m thankful for her because she doesn’t just teach leadership—she expects it, and that expectation has forced me to grow in ways I wouldn’t have on my own.
One thing I’d add about Dr. Stacy Luckett is that she doesn’t let you hide behind potential—she pushes you to produce. She has a way of making you raise your own standards, and because of that, I’m walking away not just more knowledgeable, but more disciplined, more confident, and more committed to leading with purpose."

Ms. Ebony Sowells, Pearland, TX (multiple nominations): "She inspired me because she makes she we become better people in life she makes sure your ok and stops all the drama."
"She helped me out. When I’m sad, she always makes me happy, and I really like that. She always helps me with work."

Ms. Emily Mack, Irmo, SC: "Emily is an inspiration in her field, working with our most at-risk youth in an alternative school. During her lunch and planning period, she donates her time to support another school working with their Special Education students. She exemplifies and models what it means to advocate and accept ALL students."
