Black Teacher Appreciation Day – Meet the Nominees (Part 9)

Let's keep the celebrations going for Black teachers! Here are the next 10 teachers nominated for Black Teacher Appreciation Day. Get to know why they are greatly appreciated:

Mrs. Cheyenne Ward, Indianapolis, IN: "As CEO, I see how her strong content knowledge pushes students to truly master chemistry while preparing them for college-level expectations. I’m grateful for the way she builds both confidence and readiness, ensuring students leave her classroom believing they can succeed in whatever comes next."

Mrs. DeQuirria Cutts Perry, McDonough, GA: "Mrs. Cutts Perry taught me so much about life and my rights. She gave me so many memories and so many laughs that I will cherish for the rest of my life. She helped me out personally on multiple occasions, she helped me when I was homeless. She bought me clothes and made sure I was able to eat. She took care of me like I was one of her own."

Mrs. Farah Springer, Odenton, MD: "Ready to walk away from a system that felt designed to dim my light, I served under a principal who led with such grace and excellence, proving that our natural hair and cultural identity belong in every room where decisions are made. I am forever grateful for her mentorship; she didn’t just tell me to be myself, she showed me how to lead with my full, unapologetic Blackness as a superpower, empowering me to advocate for our community with a renewed and unshakeable sense of purpose."

Mrs. Jessica Roubisoff: "Mrs. Roubisoff is an amazing educator, committed to the success and development of all of her students. I’m thankful for her continued interest in seeing the needs of students when so many on speak about this work."

Mrs. Kimberly Andrews, Philadelphia, PA: "Mrs. Andrews is my teacher role model. She is wise and poised, builds deep relationships with her students, takes time to check in with kids struggling one on one, and get them extra support in class through small-group differentiated instruction and out of class through tutoring and review at lunch and after-school. In addition to being a fantastic teacher that illuminates complex Biology concepts for students of all abilities, Mrs. Andrews organized Black History Month, culminating in a jaw dropping student performance and she is a director of the school theater department. Kids find their voice with Mrs. Andrews and I'm so grateful to have learned from her."

Mrs. Nikki Domally, Asheboro, NC: "Nikki was my teacher in high school, and I was intrigued by her boldness and determination. She is a black woman who was fluent in Spanish and pursued a career in teaching Spanish. She later became a principal, and today is my boss. I continue to learn everyday from my favorite teacher as she helps mentor me on my journey to principalship."

Mrs. Shakilah Daniel Edgewood, MD: "There are three C's I would use to describe Mrs. Daniel. Care, Compassion, and Connection. Mrs. Daniel truly shows each one of these with every child that enters her classroom. The level of growth these children experience having a teacher that genuinely cares about the children's well-being as well as their education has truly opened my eyes to how a classroom should be."

Mrs. Shuwanda Ivery, Garland, TX: "My wife is a great teacher. She cares about and loves her students. She is also very passionate about teaching."

Mrs. Susanne Warren: "Growing up watching my mother dedicate her career to special education instilled in me a deep belief that every student deserves a champion in their corner. Her unwavering commitment to the most vulnerable learners inspired me to pursue my own 14-year journey in education, carrying forward her legacy of compassion and advocacy."

Mrs. Tamekia Buckner, Richton Park, IL: "She overcomes the limitations of sickle cell disease daily and gives her full effort to pour into the lives of her students. She works extremely long hours and puts a lot of energy into creating an inviting and inspirational environment in her classroom and providing the students with the tools they need to succeed."
