The Center for Black Educator Development stands firm with HBCUs In the wake of “Terroristic threats”

Today, Sharif El-Mekki, the CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development, issued the following statement in response to the threats made to HBCUs:

While the threats at HBCUs have been called a hoax, they’re very real for a Black community that has been historically silenced, intimidated, and grossly targeted by extremists.”

“HBCUs serve as safe, culturally affirming spaces for Black students, and to threaten HBCUs is to threaten the very fabric of our society and communities. These institutions were created out of necessity because Black people were systematically denied access to education at predominantly white institutions. Many of the nation's teachers are HBCU alums, signaling the strong commitment to advancing education and equity.”

“The Center for Black Educator Development stands firmly with HBCUs and rejects any form of violence against these institutions that are meant to forward academic progress and Black student excellence.”

Our mission at The Center for Black Educator Development is to rebuild the Black teacher pipeline to achieve educational equity and racial justice. In the ongoing fight to address underrepresentation and improve educational opportunity, the Center for Black Educator Development remains steadfast in its commitment to increasing Black teacher representation.”
