Center for Black Educator Development launches national #WeNeedBlackTeachers campaign
By Colorado Children’s Campaign
On Sept. 9, the Center for Black Educator Development launched the #WeNeedBlackTeachers National Campaign, which strives to raise awareness around the shortage of Black teachers and inspire young Black students to answer the call to consider becoming a teacher themselves.
Black teachers have a proven impact on student learning – Black students are over 32% more likely to graduate from high school and enroll in college if they had two Black teachers while in elementary school. #WeNeedBlackTeachers shares that when teachers in our classrooms reflect our students, it holds promise for closing achievement and opportunity gaps. Our youth, especially Black youth, need Black teachers.
While the campaign launched on Sept. 9, it is never too late to get involved. Search the hashtag #WeNeedBlackTeachers across social media platforms to read first-hand accounts of the unique ways in which Black teachers have impacted their students – and join in if you have a story to share!
